Egoscue

Dave Pic of Egoscue Los Angeles Clinic Month 4Wow!  I can’t believe it is month 4 already!! Sorry about this month’s assessment missing 2 of the pics… they were there when we took them but for whatever reason when the file was emailed over to me (I actually don’t think I ever mentioned that in a post before, but the egoscue clinic will email you both your updated pictures as well as your updated menu with the instructions.. very handy for me b/c I tend to misplace things!), only the two pics appeared.

So as you can see from the front pic my head still loves hanging out to one side.  I have done some more research about posture alignment and I am thinking about going to a chiropractor who specializes in the alignment of the atlas of the head.  I spoke to my Egoscue peeps and Nicole mentioned that there are some people who have also gone for this type of treatment and have found success as it beign a nice compliment to the egoscue method.

Something that I have been doing most recently is a little myofascial release BEFORE my e cises.  Now you can start off simply using a foam roller, but I have taken it to the next level (or torture), and have been using a lacrosse ball to really go after my trigger points.

I have found that by working the ball on my IT bands as well as the inner thighs, it allows my upper body work to be more effective.  This whole journey has proven itself to me that the body truly is inter connected!

My big discovery this month is my thoracic spine!  It is crazy how having a small inch of extra “space” there effects my breathing, hips, even the resonance in my speaking voice!!

The other big thing this month is that I have come to accept and love the groin tower.  Yes, it takes a long time and for me laying there s harder than doing something.  But the thing is if you listen to some music or focus your mind on different parts of your body while in this position the time will fly by.

Here is an easy yet very powerful egoscue tip while in the tower:

So when you’re lying there in the tower, think back to the other e sices you did earlier.  How did your hips feel after doing static back?  Where were your shoulder after you did some proper shrug and circles?  Are they still in that relaxed setting.  The idea behind this is that you are using muscle memory that you experienced successfully in one ecise and now carrying that over into this new ecise.  In my opinion it is the missing link to achieving success in the other movements that you may be experiencing some challenges with.

Hope I was able to straighten things out for ya! Stay tuned for Egoscue pic month 5!!

So this is month 3 of my Egoscue Clinic experiment. As you can see from the pics things are starting to move!! I still have a long way to go. Something to note is that the more things are getting “fixed”, other things are feeling weird (I say weird b/c it is not so much pain, but just feels different)… it is kind of like certain weaker muscles are now getting exposed.

Egoscue Clinic 3 Month Update

My new E-cise menu is pretty ambitious.. 2 hours a day! So we will see if I can keep up.. but I am super excited with the results so far.

Stay tuned, as my Egoscue Clinic updates continues.

Here are my pics after doing the prescribed e-cises for 1 month.

As you can see my right shoulder is still significantly lower than my right.  In fact after we did the e-cises it was EVEN LOWER!!  I couldn’t believe it!!  I mean here I am doing these exercises almost every day (I did them 6 days a week!) – and instead of my right shoulder moving down.. my left shoulder does.

Turns out both of my shoulders are/were pretty “stuck” so even though the right one, which was lower looked ok compared to my left.. it was also had a long way to go.  It is so crazy how conditioned I have become to just accept tension that I did not even realize how much restriction I had until doing these movements.

So… my hope is that as the months go on and as we continue to change up the menu, my left should will follow suit and release as well.

My menu also included the supine grown stretch (sexy huh?) – basically you are holding this position for a pretty long time.. so for the peeps that are doing this I can recommend a few tips (actually this applies for most of the e-cises):

  1. passive activities are great to help keep you sane.. things like the radio, and audio book, podcasts, pandora and even watching TV (as long as the TV is angled properly)
  2. you can also do interactive activities too like using a bluetooth headset and calling a friend. However, I must say that this does take away from the e-cises b/c there is a lot going on while you’re in these positions (focusing on hips, breathing, intention, letting go, etc)..
  3. a nice mix that has been working for me is that 4 or 5 days a week I do passive stuff like listen to the radio, 1 day I will do phone calls, and 1 day a week I will shut everything off, turn the lights out, light a candle and completely focus on the menu.
  4. hope these tips help.

Final insight for this month, is that other parts of your body may need to be released first before the main pain/structure gets corrected.  For me it has been all aobut my feet and ankles!!  I had no idea that these were problem areas as I cam in to help with upper back pain.  Well after these e-cises I feel like my feet have stretched.. as in grown!

If you have even been to a rolfer you will know what I mean.. but this is all from internal stimulus!

As for my pics.. yes I still have a long way to go, but this month gave me enough satisfaction in how I feel that I am motivated enough to continue into month 2.

See you next month!

Dave

PS:  Several people have been asking me are there any resources online regarding how to fix your back pain through body structure.  Though for many  people it probably won’t match a personal 1 on 1 session at a walk in Egoscue clinic, it is definitely an alternative that seems to be aligned* with the philosophy.

Here are my pics after doing the prescribed e-cises for (almost) 2 months.

Egoscue Update

Month 2

This month’s check in had to be cut form 4 weeks to 3 b/c I was headed to NY for my niece’s 1 year old birthday party (and a bachelor party in Puerto Rico).

Because I was traveling and would be out of my natural schedule, Paul designed a smaller menu for me this month.  The focus is working on my Thoracic spine (the upper spine), and working on aligning my ankle, knees, and hips.  Not sure if you can tell from the pic, but my knees are bent forward (I did not notice this as in my mind I was standing straight).

An interesting insight to this, is that I have never really had knee pain (aside from when I was really young and I was told they were due to growing pains), and still do not have knee pain… so I was a bit confused how I had no pain yet my knees are clearly out of alignment AND when I tried to stretch them by just straightening them out more in my current posture they would not budge.

So  What Is Happening Here?

The body works together, so if my knees are in constant flexion other parts of my body are trying to compensate which sometimes causes pain to be expressed in other areas (for me my upper back, neck, shoulders, jaw, etc).

How Do You Address It?

There is a bunch of stuff and I know that Paul would recommend a full menu of e-cises that changes as the body changes, and this is what I have been doing.  But to use this as an example, a particular exercise that I have been prescribed is called the Wall Drop.

You stand on a slantboard (or even  a step-ladder will do), feet pointed straight and hip width apart with your head, shoulders and butt against the wall. We have all done calf stretches before, but when your head shoulders and butt is against a wall, it insures the proper position of all the joints involved while you are stretching the ankle, Achilles, knee, and hip.  Once these guys get straightened out I found my upper body (specially my thoracic spine), magically felt better.  Crazy concept how what looks like to be a simple calf stretch can help with upper back pain… but it works, and the more I have been doing these e-cises the more it makes sense to me.

The Bad News?

If you look at my pics, you will see I still have a very long way to go in fixing my upper back imbalances.  If I compare month 1 with month 2, they look the same… Paul did point out some differences that I did not pick up on until he showed them to me, he has probably seen thousands of these pics so he is a wee bit more experienced. :)

I also hurt my back playing dodgeball last week..

“WHAT!!!!!!  But Dave I thought the whole point of Egoscue was to remove Pain and then Restore Function?  And now you’re telling me you got hurt.  What gives?”

What happened was that even though the pics are not showing it as much as I would like, the changes that I am feeling have been nothing short of incredible.  My should continues to “unlock” and the flexion in my upper back feels much looser too.  This has contributed to me throwing much, much harder at my dodgeball games. The problem is that I pushed my new found strength and went over board.

The take a way I got from this is… as muscles realign they need to be retrained and restrengthened.  Before my body was positioned in a way that I could not throw the way I have been throwing lately which meant I had to push a lot harder than what I am doing now.  BUT just because my new body position is more efficient does not mean it can handle the push that it once was doing without some time.

I compare it to a brand new car with a better transmission.  You can go just as fast (if not faster), without pressing as hard on the gas peddle.  Since the injury I have been more mind full of this.  It is also pretty crazy how weak some of my muscles are once they have been exposed when the compensating muscles are removed.

I am looking at this as 3 steps forward 1 step back.

And speaking of looking forward and back.  I look forward to showing you my back results next month.  Cheesy pun (unfortunately) intended.  :)

In this episode we jump right into two of the “E-sices” that were prescribed to me in my Egoscue menu.

Pay close attention to the subtleties of Paul’s instructions in each of the positions… though they may seem insignificant , they make a HUGE difference.

Remember… don’t just watch… DO!

Try these out for yourself and share your experiences in the comment section.

Even though this is only a small part of my program, you can feel a big difference by just taking 5 minutes out of (or into) your day to benefit from just these two movements…

Here’s What To Do Next

1.  Do these e-sices Right Now.. (seriously, do them right now)

2.  Share your experience of how you felt before, during, and after the e-sice.  The more peeps that contribute the better for everyone.

3.  Share this with anyone who can use a nice break from sitting at their desk all day long by click the Facebook and Twitter Buttons below.

4.  Have the best day ever.

Dave :)

This is part 2 of Season 5 of What The Friday! Paul from the Egoscue Clinic in Santa Monica takes pictures of my posture from all four angels and then goes over the assessment with me.

It is a very humbling experience. It is amazing how one thing can effect something else.

The good news is that Paul says my postural imbalance is not just treatable but curable… even my scoliosis!!

The bad news is that it takes Time and Action!!

hmmm… I think Egoscue fits right in with the WTF! mentality of .. DOING IT NOW!

What The Friday!
Dave :)

oh yeah, if you are interested in getting your own postural assessment from Paul and the gang (they can do virtual assessments too from anywhere in the world!) – check out their website and contact them here:

Hey gang… thought it would be fun to do a little reporting and invite you to take a peak of my current 30 Day Challenge.  For those that need to get caught up, Check out my last post which gives you a quick intro into the Egoscue Method.

Otherwise, welcome to the new Season of What The Friday!  Note that in episodes 1 and 2 we cover a brief intro and philosophy of the Egoscue Method and then personally assess my current postural alignment.. (ahem more like non-alignment).  In episodes 3 and 4 Paul was kind enough to allow us to film some of the actual exercises that were prescribed for me so that our viewers can benefit and begin to feel pain free.

What The Friday!
Dave

PS:  In addition to the videos, I will be posting pictures of my current posture every couple of weeks so that all of us can see what effect it has had.

PPS: Have the best weekend ever and if you enjoyed this article and/or you want to help justify me staying up till 2am this morning trying to figure out how to install the Facebook Like and Twitter Button that you see right below… it would mean a lot to me if you would click on one or two of those buttons to share the word.

The Power of The 30 Day Challenge

Many of you already know that I am a BIG fan of what I call a 30 Day Challenge.  Basically it is trying something for 30 days before making a final decision whether I should continue, modify, or move on to something else.

Probably the best 30 Day Challenge I have ever done was back in 2006 when I told myself I would brew and drink my own homemade kombucha tea for 30 days… that led to getting off all my acid reflux prescription meds, the beginning of  the top ranked kombucha home brewing website (according to google… and all of you guys!!), and the empowerment to help others through my discoveries.. such as Jiaogulan and Wheatgrass.

However, I have done several other 30 Day Challenges.. here are a few and their outcomes:

  • P90x
    • This was a 90 day challenge! and the best thing that came out of this was I can pretty much beat anyone in a pull up competition!
    • Unfortunately the worst thing that came out of this was almost destroying my shoulders.  Please be careful on this program.
  • Tony Robbins Personal Power
    • Freakin’ Love It!
    • For me it is not so much the content, but the signals you are sending letting your subconscious (or whatever name you want to call it), that it is important to take care of yourself.
  • Going Veggie
    • Great experience for the short term, it forced me to focus on so many different creative dishes.
    • I learned that for myself I do prefer eating some meat… though it has been much less (and I am much more aware of the amounts) since this challenge.
  • Hypnosis
    • I have taken Igor Ledochowski’s Conversational Hypnosis Course and it rocks.
    • Since then Igor has become both a friend and a mentor.
    • I used the techniques I learned to help a friend Stop Smoking… it has now been over 1 year without a single cigarette. (shout out to Dee!).
  • Dodgeball
    • My new favorite obsession!
    • I now play in a league and look forward to the game (as well as the karaoke bar where we all go after wards).

The above are just a sampling and in case you can’t tell… I love them!

What I Never Realized Until Now

I realized something. If you remember, my 30 Day Kombucha Challenge led to writing the 7 Day Kombucha Mini Course and thousands of new home brewers.  All I really did was just document my findings and share them with the world.

I think the main success has been that despite million dollar scientific lab findings (sometimes funded by questionable vested interest groups) sometimes people resonate more with a real person and their real personal experience.

And it is with that in mind that I offer you a special upcoming season of…

What The Friday!

Living Case Studies Edition.

That’s right. We are taking it to the streets and documenting every step of the way for you!  Now I am sure many of you are saying “Egosc-WHO” so before we get into it here is a brief description of the Egoscue Method straight from the site:

“With over 25 clinics worldwide, the Egoscue Method works by empowering individuals to tap into their body’s ability to heal itself, and free themselves of chronic pain conditions such as: TMJ, carpal tunnel, neck, back, knee and shoulder pain, and a number of other ailments. We help people of all ages regardless of their past conditions or injuries. For those with an sports background, numerous professional athletes use the Method and Patch Fitness to enhance their performance and extend their careers.”

How I Discovered Them. A few months ago I received an email from a customer who just purchased a Kombucha Continuous Home Brewing System along with the Kombucha DVDs.

As much as he loved the videos he couldn’t help but notice that while my kombucha teaching was outstanding (his word, not mine), my posture was, well, pretty horrible.  Although he was a physical therapist, instead of recommending physical therapy he simply suggested that I pick up a book called Pain Free by Peter Egoscue.

I was so impressed that a customer took the time to not only watch and send feedback on our videos, but to care about me enough to offer this suggestion, that the next day I went to Amazon and spent a whopping 17 bucks or something just to try it out…

Amazing. A few days later the book came and both the exercises AND the philosophy resonated so much with me that I immediately began doing the “E-cises”.  I felt so good every time I did them, that I wanted to do more the next day.  Well fast forward 30 days (the 30 day challenge was to just follow the basic E-sises for my pain in the book.. took about 10 minutes a day) and I began researching a little more about Egoscue and what else they had to offer.

Basically I was feeling great but I sort of hit a plateau. The other thing was that Egoscue (along with many testimonies) claims that they have saved people from surgery!  For me my miracle would be just as challenging… CURE MY SCOLIOSIS!

Discovery. This lead me to find the Los Angeles Egoscue Clinic.  It was there that I discovered that these guys can take it to the next level by offering custom tailored “E menu’s” personally designed based off of the assessment.

Experience It For Yourself. Paul, the owner of the Egoscue Los Angeles Clinic, was kind enough to allow us to bring our cameras in to the initial meeting where we took my postural pictures, went over my specific imbalances, prescribed my personal E-sice menu and then worked with me on how to properly perform each one so that I can get the most out of each session.

What this means is that you have a front row ticket to see what goes on inside an actual clinic.

Even More. In addition to the What The Friday Series.. I will be personally updating you on my progress via monthly pictures and video blogs on youtube.  This way not only will you get to experience an initial Egoscue Clinic Session.. you will also get to see the first ever Egoscue Living Case Study!

Stay Tuned. It has only been 3 weeks since the visit and I am experiencing such benefits it is awesome.  I realize I have a long way to go to change scoliosis (in fact up until now I was told and believed that I could not fix it!)… but the fact that I FEEL better and better each and every time I follow the program, is enough to keep me going!

Future Episodes and Video Posts Topics Include:

  • How we get out of balance to begin with
  • Source of Pain vs Cause of Pain
  • The best E-sice for Desk Jockies
  • The psychology of my forward head and rounded shoulders
  • 1 month check in
  • Setting yourself up for success
  • Much More.  :)

Until Then. If you are interested in learning more about Egoscue, Paul told me that he is happy to answer anyone’s questions here.  And the best part is that it does not matter if you live in Los Angeles, or Russia, b/c they can do sessions virtually via skype!!  How Cool Is That?

Till Next Week…  What The Friday!

PS:  Several people have been asking me are there any resources online regarding how to fix your back pain through body structure.  Though for many  people it probably won’t match a personal 1 on 1 session at a walk in Egoscue clinic, it is definitely an alternative that seems to be aligned* with the philosophy.
