What The Friday Episodes

Here are my pics after doing the prescribed e-cises for 1 month.

As you can see my right shoulder is still significantly lower than my right.  In fact after we did the e-cises it was EVEN LOWER!!  I couldn’t believe it!!  I mean here I am doing these exercises almost every day (I did them 6 days a week!) – and instead of my right shoulder moving down.. my left shoulder does.

Turns out both of my shoulders are/were pretty “stuck” so even though the right one, which was lower looked ok compared to my left.. it was also had a long way to go.  It is so crazy how conditioned I have become to just accept tension that I did not even realize how much restriction I had until doing these movements.

So… my hope is that as the months go on and as we continue to change up the menu, my left should will follow suit and release as well.

My menu also included the supine grown stretch (sexy huh?) – basically you are holding this position for a pretty long time.. so for the peeps that are doing this I can recommend a few tips (actually this applies for most of the e-cises):

  1. passive activities are great to help keep you sane.. things like the radio, and audio book, podcasts, pandora and even watching TV (as long as the TV is angled properly)
  2. you can also do interactive activities too like using a bluetooth headset and calling a friend. However, I must say that this does take away from the e-cises b/c there is a lot going on while you’re in these positions (focusing on hips, breathing, intention, letting go, etc)..
  3. a nice mix that has been working for me is that 4 or 5 days a week I do passive stuff like listen to the radio, 1 day I will do phone calls, and 1 day a week I will shut everything off, turn the lights out, light a candle and completely focus on the menu.
  4. hope these tips help.

Final insight for this month, is that other parts of your body may need to be released first before the main pain/structure gets corrected.  For me it has been all aobut my feet and ankles!!  I had no idea that these were problem areas as I cam in to help with upper back pain.  Well after these e-cises I feel like my feet have stretched.. as in grown!

If you have even been to a rolfer you will know what I mean.. but this is all from internal stimulus!

As for my pics.. yes I still have a long way to go, but this month gave me enough satisfaction in how I feel that I am motivated enough to continue into month 2.

Pay close attention to the subtleties of Paul’s instructions in each of the positions… though they may seem insignificant , they make a HUGE difference.

This is part 2 of Season 5 of What The Friday! Paul from the Egoscue Clinic in Santa Monica takes pictures of my posture from all four angels and then goes over the assessment with me.

It is a very humbling experience. It is amazing how one thing can effect something else.

The good news is that Paul says my postural imbalance is not just treatable but curable… even my scoliosis!!

The bad news is that it takes Time and Action!!

hmmm… I think Egoscue fits right in with the WTF! mentality of .. DOING IT NOW!

Hey gang… thought it would be fun to do a little reporting and invite you to take a peak of my current 30 Day Challenge.  For those that need to get caught up, Check out my last post which gives you a quick intro into the Egoscue Method.

Otherwise, welcome to the new Season of What The Friday!  Note that in episodes 1 and 2 we cover a brief intro and philosophy of the Egoscue Method and then personally assess my current postural alignment.. (ahem more like non-alignment).  In episodes 3 and 4 Paul was kind enough to allow us to film some of the actual exercises that were prescribed for me so that our viewers can benefit and begin to feel pain free.

The Power of The 30 Day Challenge

Many of you already know that I am a BIG fan of what I call a 30 Day Challenge.  Basically it is trying something for 30 days before making a final decision whether I should continue, modify, or move on to something else.

Probably the best 30 Day Challenge I have ever done was back in 2006 when I told myself I would brew and drink my own homemade kombucha tea for 30 days… that led to getting off all my acid reflux prescription meds, the beginning of  the top ranked kombucha home brewing website (according to google… and all of you guys!!), and the empowerment to help others through my discoveries.. such as Jiaogulan and Wheatgrass.

However, I have done several other 30 Day Challenges.. here are a few and their outcomes:

  • P90x
    • This was a 90 day challenge! and the best thing that came out of this was I can pretty much beat anyone in a pull up competition!
    • Unfortunately the worst thing that came out of this was almost destroying my shoulders.  Please be careful on this program.
  • Tony Robbins Personal Power
    • Freakin’ Love It!
    • For me it is not so much the content, but the signals you are sending letting your subconscious (or whatever name you want to call it), that it is important to take care of yourself.
  • Going Veggie
    • Great experience for the short term, it forced me to focus on so many different creative dishes.
    • I learned that for myself I do prefer eating some meat… though it has been much less (and I am much more aware of the amounts) since this challenge.
  • Hypnosis
    • I have taken Igor Ledochowski’s Conversational Hypnosis Course and it rocks.
    • Since then Igor has become both a friend and a mentor.
    • I used the techniques I learned to help a friend Stop Smoking… it has now been over 1 year without a single cigarette. (shout out to Dee!).
  • Dodgeball
    • My new favorite obsession!
    • I now play in a league and look forward to the game (as well as the karaoke bar where we all go after wards).

The above are just a sampling and in case you can’t tell… I love them!

What I Never Realized Until Now

I realized something. If you remember, my 30 Day Kombucha Challenge led to writing the 7 Day Kombucha Mini Course and thousands of new home brewers.  All I really did was just document my findings and share them with the world.

I think the main success has been that despite million dollar scientific lab findings (sometimes funded by questionable vested interest groups) sometimes people resonate more with a real person and their real personal experience.

And it is with that in mind that I offer you a special upcoming season of…

Living Case Studies Edition.

That’s right. We are taking it to the streets and documenting every step of the way for you!  Now I am sure many of you are saying “Egosc-WHO” so before we get into it here is a brief description of the Egoscue Method straight from the site:

How I Discovered Them. A few months ago I received an email from a customer who just purchased a Kombucha Continuous Home Brewing System along with the Kombucha DVDs.

As much as he loved the videos he couldn’t help but notice that while my kombucha teaching was outstanding (his word, not mine), my posture was, well, pretty horrible.  Although he was a physical therapist, instead of recommending physical therapy he simply suggested that I pick up a book called Pain Free by Peter Egoscue.

I was so impressed that a customer took the time to not only watch and send feedback on our videos, but to care about me enough to offer this suggestion, that the next day I went to Amazon and spent a whopping 17 bucks or something just to try it out…

Amazing. A few days later the book came and both the exercises AND the philosophy resonated so much with me that I immediately began doing the “E-cises”.  I felt so good every time I did them, that I wanted to do more the next day.  Well fast forward 30 days (the 30 day challenge was to just follow the basic E-sises for my pain in the book.. took about 10 minutes a day) and I began researching a little more about Egoscue and what else they had to offer.

Basically I was feeling great but I sort of hit a plateau. The other thing was that Egoscue (along with many testimonies) claims that they have saved people from surgery!  For me my miracle would be just as challenging… CURE MY SCOLIOSIS!

Discovery. This lead me to find the Los Angeles Egoscue Clinic.  It was there that I discovered that these guys can take it to the next level by offering custom tailored “E menu’s” personally designed based off of the assessment.

Experience It For Yourself. Paul, the owner of the Egoscue Los Angeles Clinic, was kind enough to allow us to bring our cameras in to the initial meeting where we took my postural pictures, went over my specific imbalances, prescribed my personal E-sice menu and then worked with me on how to properly perform each one so that I can get the most out of each session.

What this means is that you have a front row ticket to see what goes on inside an actual clinic.
